How to care and store greenhouse seedless cucumbers & mini cucumbers

Store Ontario greenhouse cucumbers in a cool place for up to ten days. Mini cucumbers should be kept in the refrigerator crisper for up to two weeks in their original packaging or cling-on film. Greenhouse "cukes" are wrapped in plastic to seal-in their natural moisture and prolong shelf life. Remember, Ontario greenhouse cucumbers do NOT require peeling. Their thin, un-waxed skin is completely edible. This means NO waste from the cucumber.

Avoid storing any cucumbers with fruits that produce the natural ripening agent ethylene, such as apples, pears and bananas.

How to select

Look for seedless cucumbers that are a deep, vivid green in colour. They should be blemish-free and heavy for their size. Check to ensure there are no soft spots or blemishes, especially at the ends.

When to find them

Ontario greenhouse cucumbers can be found all year long! You will find greenhouse cucumbers wrapped or mini cucumbers in bags or trays.

Did you know?

Greenhouse cucumbers are seedless because they are not pollinated. This is especially helpful for preventing gas caused by eating cucumber seeds!

TOMATOES  

How to care and store

NEVER refrigerate Greenhouse tomatoes! It spoils their taste and ruins their texture. Ontario Greenhouse tomatoes should be stored in a cool location, ideally at 13 to 15 degrees Celsius, or 55 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit, out of direct sunlight.

How to select

Look for tomatoes that are plump, firm, free of surface cracks and bruises and heavy for their size. Selecting Ontario Greenhouse tomatoes that are at varying degrees of ripeness will ensure that you have perfect tomatoes every day of the week!

When to find them

Ontario greenhouse tomatoes can be found from March until late November.

PEPPERS  

How to care and store

Greenhouse peppers are best stored in the refrigerator until you are ready to use them. Rinse in cold water before food preparation. Remove the core and seeds before prepping.

How to select

Choose greenhouse peppers that are smooth, firm and plump with thick shiny skins. Make sure that there are no cracks or soft spots.

When to find them

Ontario greenhouse peppers can be found from March until late November. Look for them loose, or in packages of three or four.

Did you know?

Red, yellow and orange bell peppers contain three to four times more vitamin C than an orange!

To find local product in your store, be sure to check for the "Product of Ontario" and "Product of Canada" signs in your store. Additionally, be sure to check the PLU or packaging of the product to ensure it reads Ontario. Checking for the Foodland Ontario logo is another great way to look for local product.
